Our first school visit

On Thursday the Special Collections Centre hosted its first school visit to the new Learning Room!

As part of their class project on the Jacobites, P5/6 from Milltimber Primary School came to the University Library to investigate how the Jacobites used symbolism to express their identity.  The pupils visited the current Jacobites exhibition and searched for Jacobite emblems.  They then took a look at one of our archive images and had a go at making their own cockades.   Keep a look out for our how-to on making a white cockade, coming up soon.

We were so busy we didn’t get a chance to take any pictures, but hopefully we’ll get some up soon after our next school visit.  In the meantime, here are some pictures of our Learning Room and the children’s comments on their visit.

If you would like to bring your class to do a Jacobites workshop, email us at scc.learning@abdn.ac.uk.

Jacobites … up in the hills

As well as doing schools workshops we also run weekend family fun sessions, with a variety of activities including crafts and storytelling.  Recently we held a weekend of activities to tie in with our current Jacobites exhibition, Rebels with a Cause: The Jacobites and the Global Imagination.

Our theme was Jacobites “up in the hills”, so the children had fun making targes and sporrans to imitate the appearance of a Highland Jacobite.

Keep an eye out for our how-to’s on making targes and sporrans.  We’ll be posting them soon.

Our next Family Fun workshops will be on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th March when we’ll be looking at “Jacobites … over the sea”.  Join us for more storytelling and crafts!
